On a dull day, weather-wise, I caught a glimpse of some bright green apples looking radiant against the royal blue glaze of my large jug. Both looked stunning. The crumpled bag had held grapes in the bottom drawer of the fridge but was a delight of twisting string handles and creases. The card with it's vertical red line was another 'gift' to add to the composition and called out for just one red apple to match.

I manufactured a platform for the group which allowed the orchid's stems and flowers to appear as a background to the bottles whilst concealing the pot at its base. The ladle was the final touch creating a much needed horizontal. In addition the ladle handle echoed the shape of the orchid stem whilst the bowl echoed the semi circular design on the older of the two bottles.

The screen with its two apertures is an item of packaging able to stand alone quite dramatically as a background to a group of objects. The decanter and dried flowers suited in terms of size and colour and the scattered wedges picked up on the angles and triangles created by the screen.

The Gift

So often the throw away packaging of a gift can be more spectacular than the gift itself. While this was not the case in this instance, the deep rose coloured carrier bag attracted me immediately as a subject for painting: its crisp structure, the changing densiry of its colour and its suitability to satisfy my enjoyment for composing extreme vertical paintings ensured that the bag could not be disposed of. It was a gift in itself. The surrounding objects were selected according to colour shape and size to compliment and contrast with the basic carrier bag: the exotic Indian tiger covered dressing gown; the antique glass decanter and a touch of natural forms in the dried flowers set in the simple pot. The reflection of the tigers in the red glass was another gift born of serendipity and the pistils of the flowers gave animated direction.
